Asylum seekers and health - a new BMA report

This section offers you some of the foundation resources you will need to work with asylum seekers and refugees (it is a bit like your first aid kit). It is a good starting place for those people who have not worked with asylum seekers before. However, if you are more experienced, you also might like to look here for funding opportunities and policy changes as well as keeping up to date with asylum issues.

A key for all health and voluntary agencies working with asylum seekers is language and interpretation; in 'vital resources' you will find a range of links, articles and contacts to improve communication. Please contact us if you have additional information you would like to see available on the HARP site

A new report from the British Medical Association, states that the health of asylum seekers may actually get worse after entry to the UK. Read a summary of the report.

The Department of Health and the Refugee Council have worked together to produce this Resource Pack for all frontline health staff and service planners who come into contact with Asylum Seekers and Refugees. Its main aim is to help local health and social care agencies to meet the needs of asylum seekers who are dispersed to their areas. Key concepts and entitlements are set out along with examples of good practice. Initiatives such as local development schemes, personal medical service pilots and the development of health assessments for asylum seekers at induction centres are all covered.
